WhiteTail Wrestling Reviews Vol 1 No 3

Once again World Wrestling Entertainment have proven themselves to be the shittiest and most despicable wrestling promotion in the world by releasing top tier talent just before the holiday season citing budget cuts despite making record profits.

Of course their defenders will say that this is business and this decision makes perfect sense. And in some ways they are correct, most wrestling fans will tune into SmackDown tomorrow morning Australian time and watch the tribal chief rule over his domain.

The fact is however that every time that this company fucks over their own wrestlers, their employees and most of all the fans of professional wrestling they will gradually lose their audience, they have had a tremendous head start over All Elite Wrestling (AEW) a promotion that first appeared on television in United States a mere 2 years ago.

But this arrogant contemptible behavior ensures that someday in my opinion in the near future they will find that this T shirt company is rapidly catching their flagship program Monday Night RAW and that hot shot booking will no longer keep them ahead anymore.

Adding to this is the fact that AEW with their PPV Full Gear just presented one of the greatest PPV programs in the last two decades perhaps only falling below their last effort at All Out in September.

This show and the follow up Dynamite one of the best TV wrestling shows in years demonstrate the sheer difference in product between World Wrestling Entertainment and All Elite Wrestling. The WWE despite having a large roster of some of the most talented wrestlers continually feature the same 20-30 people in their product having the same drab matches with the same dull promos and storylines with the same terrible camera cuts by lifer Kevin Dunn. The same complacency since the end of WCW in 2001 with the same senile old man in charge.

AEW on the other hand have amazing storylines, matches that are occurring for the first time or rarely ever repeated with a rotating roster that means no wrestler gets stale and over exposed. Promos feel real and not rehearsed and the promotion feels genuinely hot with an audience that come across as real fans young and vibrant and excited for the future.

Instead of releasing talent WWE should be using that talent to create the great product that they are capable of producing. They have done it before with Hunter’s NXT but have butchered virtually every chance that they have had to create a new star in the last half decade.

They should learn from AEW, create an exciting product which feels fresh through a constantly rotating roster, with young up and comers and veteran stars in equal measure. Move away from rematches and stale often repeated storylines with nonsensical booking and hire wrestlers to write your product and not Hollywood writers.

In edition 1 of WhiteTail Wrestling reviews I wrote about the possible futures of wrestlers such as Keith Lee and Ember Moon who I think have all the potential in the world but were failed by the promotion that they were working for. In this issue once again I will be talking about some performers that deserved so much better from the company they independently contracted for (WWE don’t treat their wrestlers as employees and unfortunately that distinction has yet to be challenged in court).

John Morrison has been a champion in every promotion he has worked for including in a previous run in WWE. He returned to the promotion along with his wife Taya Valkyrie a veteran women’s wrestler who is a former Impact women’s champion only to be attacked by zombies with his tag team partner the Miz his wife was released a month ago and now Morrison will have to find work himself.

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott is a super talented wrestler he is a former NXT North American Champion who could have been a major star if allowed to but was instead completely wasted on the main roster. Would be a great signing for AEW or even NJPW where he would be great as a junior heavyweight. Before WWE he was a rising star in the indie scene and it would be interesting to see how much he would have progressed if he had not signed with the “Fed”.

Tegan Nox is a brilliant women’s wrestler from Wales, she has had a lot of injuries unfortunately they have often occured at the worst possible time including during the Mae Young Classic (when WWE pretended to care about women’s wrestling) and when about to receive a big push in NXT. She was brought up to the main roster a few months ago teamed with Shotzi Blackheart beat the tag champs and hasn’t been seen since. She would be an excellent signing for AEW Women’s division as well as for a joshi promotion such as Stardom when borders open up again.

Drake Maverick is a guy that is smaller in stature but high in determination he was released last year but through his own determination he managed to keep his job for just a little while longer. I’m not sure where he ends up but wherever he ends up you can expect him to give his absolute best.

Shane Thorne a wrestler from the great state of Western Australia. he is a former tag team partner of Mikey Nicholls (Nick Miller in WWE). Had a good career in Japan and that seems the most likely destination if he doesn’t return home to WA. Jonah Rock’s arrival in NJPW could lead to a great reunion of TMDK along with Nicholls and this would be a great boon to NJPW’s weak tag team division.

I haven’t watched any of WWE’s product this week and as a result of WWE’s decision today to treat their “employees” in such a contemptable manner I won’t be watching SmackDown tommorrow. I am thinking of doing some retro reviews so I may watch some old Survivor Series other that that I won’t be watching much WWE product. Survivor Series 2021 is coming up this weekend and as of now I am genuially not sure if I will be watching and reviewing one of WWE’s big four shows.

So enough of the rant and time for reviews.

AEW

After September’s All Out which was considered one of the best PPV shows in many years and perhaps as good or even better than Wrestlemania 17 the show in 2001 that featured the famous Austin heel turn and was in many ways the culmination of the Attitude Era.

Two weeks prior to Full Gear it would have been hard to believe that Full Gear would even come close to All Out in terms of a great PPV event. However AEW nailed the build up in the closing weeks building a number of matches that fans anxiously awaited such as Punk vs Kingston, Aliin vs MJF, Danielson vs Miro, The Superkliq vs Christian and the Jurassic Express and of course the main event as Adam Page attempted to finally become champion against his former tag team partner Kenny Omega in perhaps the culmination of a story dating back to the very beginning of AEW.

The kick off show began with Dante Martin in his home town of Minneapolis in the ring with Tony Schiavone who asks Martin about the offer by Team Taz to join up with them that occurred on Rampage. The Acclaimed come to the ring with Caster doing his usual enjoyable rap gimmick. The Acclaimed try to recruit Martin which they soon regret as they get strikes from Martin who then does an amazing dive to the outside on both men.

The pre show match featured Hikaru Shida and Thunder Rosa team up to defeat heels Nyla Rose and Jamie Hayter. A lot of the match featured the heels beating on Shida with her comebacks stopped by heel tactics including a distraction from Serena Deeb the rival of Shida who was seated in the crowd allowing Vickie Guerrero to use a kendo stick on Shida’s knee. Rose hits a big splash on Shida that would have ended the match if not for the intervention of Rosa. Rose looks to end the match with the beast bomb but Shida counters into the pinfall. Solid match with everyone here putting in a decent performance with Rosa doing really good in the limited time that she was involved in the match. **3/4

The Full Gear main card kicked off with an awesome match as MJF did what he said he would do and beat Darby Allin with a headlock takeover in a brilliant heel move. The match starts with some excellent technical wrestling as the crowd quickly gets involved excited about the action. The action goes to the outside with Allin showing off his dare devil tactics that can often cost him and this gives the advantage to MJF when Allin misses a coffin drop onto the apron. MJF is more known for his mic work but showed that he is a damn good wrestler using his size advantage against Allin to demonstrate some excellent power moves. MJF injures his knee early in the match and this allows Allin to get back into the match by going after the knee and locking in a figure four leglock which MJF escapes. Both men end up down on the outside after a tombstone piledriver by MJF onto the apron. We then get the best action sequences of the match as both men try for a pin with some awesome near falls including the highlight of the match a extraordinarily close near fall after a code red from Allin. MJF goes outside to avoid a coffin drop which Allin lands on the outside anyway and attempts another one in the ring which lands effectively on the knee of MJF but Allin can’t take advantage and gain the fall. Shawn Spears and Wardlow come to the ring to interfere for MJF but Sting comes out and they are forced to retreat. It is here that the match ends with the MJF headlock takeover. However he had taken advantage of the drama and struck Allin with a punch from his diamond ring. A perfect opener which set the mood for the show to come. ****3/4

The Lucha Bros (Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix) successfully defended their AEW Tag titles against FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood). This was a great match which had a slightly disappointing finish although it was clearly designed to set up a rematch at some stage. Some awesome tag team wrestling as we see the champs with their amazing high flying fast paced offense against the old school heels FTR. We got some great near falls with FTR seemingly having the match won twice firstly after a belt shot and a brainbuster and then after a spike piledriver. FTR used some memorable old school tactics including distracting the ref to prevent them from seeing a Lucha Bros tag. Lucha Bros gained some great near falls towards the end if one of them ended the match it would have received an even higher score. The match ends when FTR put on masks and Lucha Bros pin the illegal man. This was a real surprise and took from the match although a future rematch should be epic. ****

After the crazy action of the first two matches things slowed down a little as Bryan Danielson defeated Miro to become the No 1 contender for the AEW World title. Miro takes control using strength and power with Danielson playing the role of the underdog. Danielson makes comebacks using his striking ability and speed but is quickly caught out by the big man Miro. Some good submission attempts by both men but neither can get the win. Danielson wins using a guillotine after a tornado ddt with Miro quickly going out. This was a very good match but couldn’t reach the level of the opening matches. ***3/4

The next match turned up the action again as Christian Cage joined with the Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) to defeat The Superkliq (Adam Cole along with Matt and Nick Jackson) in a crazy falls count anywhere match. It would be virtually impossible to describe all the action in this match. We had crazy spots in the ring, outside the ring, in the crowd and on the entrance ramp. We got crazy weapon spots involving chairs, tables and thumbtacks. We got a dive from Christian from the balcony in the stands onto his opponents. We got more crazy dives from the entrance ramp. The match even had a story as Jungle Boy had been trained to be tougher and more aggressive in recent weeks as he has lacked the willingness to use weapons and put his opponents away. Christian is about to do the conchairto onto Matt Jackson but Jungle Boy took the chair did the deed and ended the match. Jungle Boy becomes Jungle Man to end an awesome match. ****1/2

PAC teamed up with Cody Rhodes to defeat Andrade and Malakai Black. The story of this match was that neither side got along and a number of betrayals were teased. There was some really good action here but the match lacked the excitement of previous encounters. PAC wins with a black arrow and FTR come out to continue the story by attacking PAC and Cody. ***1/4

Tay Conti attempted to become AEW Women’s champion against Britt Baker but ultimately fell just short. This was a very good match but couldn’t reach the level of most the show and it showed with the crowd clearly starting to get tired. Conti tried really hard and despite falling to defeat was made to look strong hitting a lot of big moves and gaining some near falls. Baker could not beat Conti with any her of her moves having to scrape a victory after both women tried to cradle pin one another. ***1/4

CM Punk defeated Eddie Kingston in a 12 minute match that was more of a fight than anything else. After the crowd had died down in the previous two encounters they were super hot for this with plenty of chants for both men who are crowd favorites but have been acting heelish in their feud with each other. The drama and excitement of this was just awesome with both men struggling with exhaustion by the end with Punk needing to use the GTS twice to finally get the victory. You won’t see many better 12 minute matches than this. ****1/2

The Inner Circle defeated America’s Top Team in a street fight which featured some more crazy action inside and outside the ring. Sammy Guevara was the highlight of the match with some crazy dives including off a ladder with a swanton bomb through a table. Chris Jericho paid tribute to his friend the last great Eddie Guerrero winning with the frog splash on Dan Lambert. ***1/2

Jay Lethal was then introduced as a new signing for AEW. He will make his debut taking on Sammy Guevara for the TNT Title on Dynamite.

After a story dating back over two years the fans were excited to see their hero Hangman Adam Page become the AEW World Champion when he took on Kenny Omega. The fans have become used to the quality booking of Tony Khan who generally does the right thing by the fans and gives them results that they actually want to see. However after decades of seeing WWE screw over the fans with finishes designed to get heat their was just a little bit of concern that the finish to this show may just be a disaster. Of course Tony Khan is not the best booker in the world for nothing and got the decision a 100% spot on again here.

This was an awesome main event that went 25 minutes and felt like 15 the only problem I had with the match is that I thought at the time it could have gone longer. With hindsight it went the perfect amount of time. There was so much great drama and excitement here with some massive moments with Omega kicking out of his own finisher the one winged angel and out of the Hangman’s finisher the deadeye but only after substitute referee Aubrey Edwards needed to run out to the ring after the first referee got in the way of a buckshot lariat. The end of the match featured the Young Bucks come to the ring seemingly to interfere on Omega’s behalf. Page hits one buckshot lariat on Omega and looks towards the Bucks who nod giving their approval the buckshot is landed and Page is the new champ. Page celebrates with his friends The Dark Order to end an almost perfect show. ****3/4

AEW followed up a great PPV with a great episode of Dynamite that built brilliantly on Full Gear and either continued or started new storylines in which to build towards future shows.

Dynamite started with a great segment as new champion Hangman Adam Page came to the ring in his home state of Virginia. The crowd were super excited to see their hero on what was proclaimed National Cowboy Shit Day and their were massive chants of Cowboy Shit from the fans. Hangman isn’t really known for his promos but he did pretty well here with the highlight being to shush the crowd when they chanted you deserve it Hangman corrected them saying that he had earned it. The you deserve it chant is almost worse than the horrible this is awesome chant so it was great to see a wrestler call that crap out.

Bryan Danielson the next challenger for the title comes to the ring. Danielson congratulates Hangman but puts in a little insult by saying that he expected to be facing off against Kenny Omega. There is a bit of back to back between the two with Danielson putting in an awesome performance on the mic including a great line to get heat with the crowd talking about how he had to back up after winning the title at Wrestlemania whereas Page didn’t have to defend his title tonight. Page offered to take on Danielson but Danielson declined saying he didn’t want Page to have any excuses when he lost. Instead he will take on every one of Page’s friends in the dark order and kick the shit out of them. He starts tonight with Evil Uno.

Danielson’s match with Uno was very good with some great striking and wrestling by both men but particularly by Danielson towards the end with some brutal moves including a big running knee and then some head stomps before locking in the triangle for the instant ref stoppage. Danielson’s next victim will be Colt Cabana next week in Chicago. ***1/4

A super promo by MJF backstage talking himself up after his big win against Darby Allin at Full Gear.

Last week we found out that the Best Friends had been allowed to join New Japan’s Chaos faction by former IWGP champ and G1 winner Kazuchika Okada. This week we got to see Orange Cassidy join up with Chaos member Tomohiro Ishii in a very good match against The Butcher and The Blade. The fans in Norfolk Virginia got to see some great moments from the Stone Pitbull Ishii who no sold a lot of offense and then delivered some devastating strikes. If the crowd did not know about Ishii before this match they were into him by the end. Cassidy along with The Butcher and The Blade played their parts well but the highlight was Ishii who got the pinfall victory after the vertical drop brainbuster. ***1/4

A very good TBS Title tournament match followed as Nyla Rose defeated Hikaru Shida. Rose effectively targeted the knee of Shida during the match and this paid off when she got the submission with a standing stretch muffler. She was assisted though by interference from Shida’s rival Serena Deeb who attacked Shida’s knee on the outside taking advantage of a distraction. ***1/4

We get more MJF this time in the ring saying he can beat anyone and he could take a big cowboy shit on Hangman’s title reign. CM Punk comes to the ring MJF offers his hand but all that Punk needs to do is laugh, walk away and shake his head.

Lio Rush and Dante Martin continued to be built as an exciting tag team defeating The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens and Max Caster) in an excellent match. Rush and Martin demonstrated some awesome high flying moves with Rush showing that he is one of the fastest and most exciting wrestlers around and that if he continues to be showcased on national television he can be a big star. Martin is clearly an up and coming star and was brilliant again and The Acclaimed were excellent as well playing their parts as heels and doing the job after a frog splash by Rush. After the match Team Taz continued their pursuit of Martin. ***1/2

Jay Lethal debuted in AEW in an excellent main event for the TNT Title against Sammy Guevara. This had a lot of brilliant action with some really impressive moves. Lethal showed that he deserves a chance with a major league promotion after years in ROH and almost pulled off an upset a number of times including when it looked like Guevara may be injured and the ref may stop the match. The crowd was really into it and were into both men but it was Guevara that would retain after his GTH finisher. The Inner Circle come out to celebrate with their man and as Dynamite goes off the air Lethal and Guevara shake hands showing respect for each other. ***3/4

Stardom

Stardom continues to be the premier destination for women’s professional wrestling in the world and the closest thing we have had to the glory days of All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling. I watched the Korakuen Hall show from the 4th of November which was focused on the Goddesses of Stardom Tag League which started last month.

The show started with a solid match in which the Donna Del Mondo team of Himeka and Natsupoi defeated sisters Hanan and Rina. The sisters tried hard but were never going to defeat DDM. **1/2

An ok match followed between Cosmic Angels (Mai Sakurai and Unagi Sayaka) and Oedo Tai (Fukigen Death and Saki Kashima). A standard undercard match with the usual Oedo Tai comedy schtick. **

DDM returned this time with Maika and Syuri defeating Lady C and Waka Tsukiyama. Lady C and Tsukiyama are inexperienced in the ring but did far better than expected putting in a good performance although it definitely helped that they were up against two excellent wrestlers in Syuri and Maika. Syuri used her usual stiff strikes and great wrestling and Maika finished the match with the Enka Atoshi on Lady C. ***

Queen’s Quest (AZM and Momo Watanabe) defeated Cosmic Angels (Mina Shirakawa and Tam Nakano) in an excellent match. This had plenty of fast paced exciting action both at the start to build the match and at the end as the match went to its conclusion. Shirakawa got some really good offense in before AZM picked up the pinfall victory with the Azumisushi. After the match Starlight Kid comes to the ring in an attempt to recruit Watanabe to Oedo Tai as part of the feud between the two. Kid tells Watanabe that she no longer has a place in QQ and as a result she should join with her. Watanabe of course rejects her offer and this feud will no doubt continue. ***1/2

Mayu Iwatani and Rin Kadokura defeated Oedo Tai (Ruaka and Starlight Kid) in another excellent match. The highlight of this was a great battle between Iwatani and Kid which was action packed with the rest of the match being very good but not at the level of Iwatani vs Kid. Despite this Kadkura and Ruaka played their parts well. ***1/2

Hazuki and Koguma went to a time limit draw against the Queen’s Quest team of Saya Kamitani and Utami Hayashishita. This was a brilliant main event with some great action all around and an excellent final battle as Hayashishita and Hazuki tried desperately to win the match for their teams. Hazuki finally gains the upper hand and hits a brainbuster but just as the referee’s hand comes down for three Kamitani dives in to make the save with the bell ringing for the time limit at the same time. After the match we got a great closing segment as Hazuki sealed her Stardom return after almost 2 years of retirement by joining Stars. There were hugs all around as all the Stars members came to the ring to celebrate. Saya Iida who has been out injured even came out and was emotional as Hazuki assisted Kagetsu in training her to be a wrestler and as Iida said is like a parent to her. ***3/4

Overall this was another excellent Stardom show with good wrestling, good booking, good stories and a great finale. Stardom along with AEW is by far the easiest and most enjoyable wrestling in the world to watch.

NJPW

New Japan has a lot of shows on this month with the ongoing Best of the Super Juniors and World Tag League. As much as I am a fan of NJPW and the wrestling is great the product lacks excitement at the moment and I expect that it will take some time for me to catch up on all these shows.

I did watch NJPW Strong from the 6th of November which was an enjoyable show. Strong has had good wrestling from the start but has improved a lot in recent months now that fans are back at NJPW tapings in the US.

Strong started with an enjoyable opener as Team Filthy (Jorel Nelson, JR Kratos and Royce Isaacs) defeated the team of Alex Coughlin, David Finlay and Yuya Uemura. This was very good with some enjoyable action and some top quality in ring work. Uemura was really impressive with the Young Lion taking it to Team Filthy but fell to defeat after some double team offense by Nelson and Isaacs. ***

Juice Robinson had perhaps a surprise victory over El Phantasmo. We got the typical ELP Bullet Club schtick and there was a botch of a cross body but the crowd were into this and the match was fun. Robinson wins using his new finisher the HHB. ***

Clark Connors and Ren Narita had an upset victory over The United Empire team of Will Ospreay and TJP. This was a very good Strong main event with an excellent final few minutes as Narita and Ospreay built towards their match at Battle of the Valley. Narita wins using his bridging double underhook suplex on TJP. After the match Ospreay tries to attack Narita with the hidden blade but Narita avoids the move and Ospreay repeats up the entrance ramp. ***1/4

Wrestlers of the Week

9 and 10. Matt and Nick Jackson (The Young Bucks) – 9 Points

The Young Bucks performed brilliantly during their defeat in the crazy falls count anywhere match at Full Gear. They were also helped by their minor but vital role in making the main event finish as great as it was.

8. Eddie Kingston – 9 Points

During the last 18 months Eddie Kingston has gone from being a journeyman indie wrestler to one of the most popular performers in the 2nd biggest promotion in the US. His match which was more of a fight against CM Punk at Full Gear was one of the great 12 minute matches you’ll ever see and had the crowd conflicted not knowing who they wanted to cheer for and if you can create that sort of circumstance when you’re against someone like CM Punk then you’ve mastered the build and the match.

7. Sammy Guevara – 10 Points

Sammy Guevara had the advantage over the wrestlers behind him in being featured in two matches this week. Guevara was the best performer in the Inner Circle vs America’s Top Team street fight with the highlight being a crazy swanton off a ladder and through a table. Guevara also defended his TNT Title against Jay Lethal in an excellent main event on Dynamite.

6. CM Punk – 10 Points

Punk not only defeated Kingston in a great match at Full Gear but he is also poised for a feud with MJF interrupting a promo from the arrogant heel on Dynamite not saying anything but not needing to as his body language said all that needed to be said.

5. Darby Allin – 10 Points

Allin picks up points this week for a great Full Gear opening match against MJF which although it didn’t result in a victory the nature of the match and the finish does no damage to Allin’s push and it will be interesting to see what will happen in the coming months.

4. Kenny Omega – 10 Points

Having an awesome match of the year contender that told a great story would have normally seen Omega in the top 2 however Omega is set to be out for a few months to recover from lingering injuries so only had a minor role in Dynamite which allowed three other wrestlers to lead over the top of the former champ.

3. MJF – 14 Points

Had the great match with Allin at Full Gear and was great as a heel promo on Dynamite. The upcoming feud with Punk should be great and we can expect some great promo battles in the coming weeks. Can MJF defeat Punk? It is actually a real possibility with MJF a brilliant heel and an underrated wrestler.

2. Adam Page – 14 Points

After becoming the AEW World Champion in a classic match and being a focal point of the next TV show you would have thought that Page would be top of this list. I was shocked when he was narrowly pipped to the post as my wrestler of the week.

1. Bryan Danielson – 15 Points

The American Dragon has showed why he is one of the best of all time since returning to pro wrestling after over a decade in WWE. Danielson’s in ring work has been almost perfect and his promos and other angle work is top tier also. Danielson’s match with Miro at Full Gear was excellent but would normally result in a finish outside the top 10 after it was actually one of the weaker matches on the show. However Danielson is poised for a world title match with Page and he outshone Page with a brilliant promo on the home state Hangman and then had an excellent TV match with Evil Uno.

Promotion of the Week

Only three promotions were featured as AEW took center stage with an all time great PPV followed by a top class TV show.

3. NJPW – 2 Points

A very good episode of NJPW Strong gives NJPW some points but they continue to fall behind AEW in terms of an exciting wrestling product that inspires the pro wrestling audience to watch.

2. Stardom – 4 Points

Stardom picks up more points for a tag focused Korakuen Hall show that had some good moments and wrestling. With more shows appearing each week and some big up and coming shows expect to see Stardom the best women’s promotion in the world continue to be a feature on this list.

1. AEW – 15 Points

An overwhelming victory in this award for AEW this week and with 37 points after just three weeks they continue to build a big lead as the world’s best promotion. As long as Dynamite and Rampage continue to be must watch television I expect AEW to continue to excite and build their audience. WWE may be the biggest promotion in the world but their lead over AEW is declining rapidly and I fully believe that unless WWE start creating a product that people other than current fans actually want to watch we will soon see a ratings victory over Monday Night RAW which continues to crater towards regularly being at about 1.5 million viewers.
