AEW Dynamite #167 – 14th December 2022

The show starts with a big match as The Elite (Kenny Omega & Matt & Nick Jackson) take on Death Triangle (PAC & Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix) in match 4 of the best of 7 for the AEW World Trios Championship. This was an excellent ***3/4 match. Started with a nice pace typical of a match between these two teams. A big moment happened fairly early with Nick Jackson suffering a storyline injury to his ankle making the match 3 on 2. Both Omega and Matt Jackson do a good job at various times in the ring with some enjoyable action but it looked like the Elite were in trouble Matt had been taken out by a package piledriver on the apron and Omega the legal man was down and looking for a tag but Nick returns tags in and is looking good until the ref is distracted and Penta smashes his ankle with a hammer Fenix then locks in the submission for the victory. Death Triangle up 3-1 in the series with the Elite in real trouble of defeat.

After the match MJF cuts a promo backstage about his match with Ricky Starks tonight. An excellent promo which sees MJF acknowledge Stark’s work the previous week but says that he is great every week and proceeds to bury Starks for the rest of the promo. Typically good promos skill from MJF.

The Acclaimed come to the ring but they are quickly jumped by Sonjay Dutt, Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh and Jay Lethal.

Jericho who just lost the ROH title to Claudio Castagnoli says he is going to kick some jobber’s ass later tonight.

Brian Cage is taking on Jack Perry in the next match of the show. Cage destroys Perry in the opening minutes and indeed for the vast majority of the match but Perry is able to fight out of every attempt to finish him. Perry locks in the snare trap but Prince Nana gets on the apron to distract the ref who misses the tap. Nana gets accidently knocked off the apron by Cage and that allows Perry to get the rollup. After the match Perry calls out Big Bill but instead Stokely Hathaway comes to the ring we then see Big Bill and Lee Moriarty jump Perry destroying him but Hook comes out and the heels back off. Looks like Perry and Hook could be a new team in AEW. **3/4

Blackpool Combat Club cut a backstage promo calling out everyone who wants some to come get it. Moxley will face Sammy Guevara on Rampage. He also calls out Hangman Page telling him he knows where to find him.

The House of Black (Brody King & Buddy Matthews & Malakai Black) took on the Factory (Aaron Solo & Cole Karter & QT Marshall). A quick squash with the House of Black decimating the Factory on the outside and then Malakai Black hits the black mass on Marshall for the pinfall. **1/4

A Hikaru Shida and Jamie Hayter video package airs about their Women’s title match and then we get a terrible backstage interview segment where Skye Blue challenges Britt Baker to a match on Rampage.

Chris Jericho takes on Action Andretti in what was supposed to be a squash match. Jericho dominates early with lots of chops and short lariats but Action Andretti gets some offense in enough for the crowd to get behind him with chants of lets go jobber. Andretti gets some more offense in even getting a two count but Jericho hits the codebreaker but shockingly Andretti kicks out to a massive crowd pop. Jericho continues to dismantle Andretti Andretti makes a comeback but that lasts seconds but Andretti makes another comeback and hits a neckbreaker he tries the split legged moonsault but Jericho gets the knees up. Jericho goes for the Judas effect but Andretti evades. Andretti goes for some high flying offense as the crowd gets hope that an upset may happen but Jericho goes for the walls of Jericho but Andretti counters and the big upset goes down after the running shooting star press. An excellent ***1/2 match that was more storyline than actual match but the story telling was perfect for what this was.

A really good promo from Ricky Starks prior to his match with MJF for the world title. He says his promo and performance in the Dynamite Diamond Battle Royal was no fluke and he will prove it tonight.

FTR challenge the Assboys to a match after they jumped them after the ROH Tag Title dog collar match.

Tay Melo takes on Ruby Soho in a grudge match after Melo broke the nose of of Soho in a match at All Out. Melo attacks Soho before the bell but when the bell rings Soho lands some back suplexes to start the match well. Melo hits a ddt on the ramp to control the match again. Melo gains some near falls after a big boot and a Gotch style piledriver. Soho wins with the destination unknown and is attacked by Anna Jay. ***

MJF has his first defense of the AEW World Championship in the main event as he takes on Ricky Starks. This was an excellent ***3/4 match which was very well worked but was clearly not designed to be a super high quality match. Some good moments here with attempted pinfalls and submissions with Starks getting enough to look like a genuine challenger but it was obvious he wasn’t going to defeat MJF on his first defense. MJF wins by cheating kicking Starks in the nuts and rolling him up. Bryan Danielson runs MJF off and holds up Starks arm to set him up as a genuine star and contender.

Show Thoughts

An excellent episode of Dynamite with nothing bad on the show and three excellent matches. Everything on here furthered storylines and Jericho gave a new wrestler a big win. Although Starks lost his method of defeat and Danielson’s intervention sets him up to be a superstar and a contender well into the future. A show well worth checking out.
