AEW Dynamite #168 – 21st December 2022

The second last Dynamite for 2022 kicked off from the Freeman Colliseum in San Antonio Texas with Ricky Starks coming out to the ring to address his defeat to MJF the previous week. A good promo from Starks is eventually interrupted by Chris Jericho and the Jericho Appreciation Society. Jericho compliments Starks and encourages him to join the JAS but Starks says he is not interested this was very entertaining. Starks says he wants a match with Jericho on January 4 but Starks is jumped by Jake Hager and then the rest of JAS joins in. Action Andretti comes out to make the save and Starks and Andretti stand tall in the ring. An excellent segment.

Match 5 of the AEW Trios Best of Seven series is next as the Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) takes on Death Triangle (PAC & The Lucha Bros (Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix). Fast paced exciting action this was a no DQ match which helped to freshen things up but felt a little messy with everything that was going on but the overall story and the action was excellent. Lots of high flying particularly early with plenty of weapon spots including ones with a festive chair with tinsel and a Christmas tree getting involved. Nakazawa and an elf (Brandon Cutler) also intervened but were quickly neutralized. Omega kicked out of the hammer spot which has been featured in every match and teased a finish which would end the series but instead the Elite won after the Meltzer driver on Fenix. After the match Death Triangle attacked the Elite damaging them before the next match next week. ***1/2

MJF is angry that his moment was ruined by Bryan Danielson after MJF beat Starks last week. Action Andretti is cutting a promo backstage but is attacked by fire from Jericho. Renee Pacquette is in the ring with Bryan Danielson who calls out MJF after an excellent promo discussing the consequences for MJF attacking William Regal. Instead of MJF Ethan Page and Stokely Hathaway come out saying that Danielson is trying to skip the queue in front of Page. Danielson says if he wants a match with him he can have it now but Page says he wants the match next week. A good segment.

Hook wins a squash against Exodus Prime but after the match we see Big Bill chokeslam Jack Perry into a dumpster. **1/4

Jon Moxley takes on Darius Martin next. This was a decent enough match but not much happened and the crowd were completely dead. Moxley wins with death rider. **1/2

FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) took on the Gunns (Austin & Colten Gunn). FTR clearly struggling to compete after the damage from the dog collar match at ROH Final Battle. FTR were good early but as the match went on they really struggled but despite that it took the Gunns cheating for them being able to win. **1/2

A terrible segment came next with Rick Ross who is a rapper acting as a mediator between feuding tag partners Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland. Ross was terrible swearing and cutting people off when they were talking and then we had Parker Bordreaux and some guy with a mohawk attack Lee a complete waste of time.

The main event for the AEW Women’s title as Jamie Hayter defends against Hikaru Shida. This was an awesome ****1/2 main event. Started a little slow but built up brilliantly with some of the highest quality of women’s wrestling ever in AEW. By the end of this match the crowd was red hot proving that the AEW crowd will get into a women’s match just as much as a men’s match provided the in ring quality is of a high enough standard. The final minutes of this match featured numerous near falls which the crowd bought into totally and they believed that either result was possible. Lots of great moves and striking from both women but in the end Hayter retains with her Hayterade lariat. One of the best women’s matches in AEW history.

Show Thoughts

An excellent episode of Dynamite with some segments that did a good job of furthering storylines and one of the best women’s matches in AEW history. There was only one segment which I didn’t like but overall an enjoyable episode of Dynamite.
