VFL – 5th July 1986

Round 15 of the VFL Season concluded with five games after a Friday night fixture the night before.

League leaders Hawthorn had a less than convincing performance against St Kilda who are struggling at the opposite end of the ladder. The conditions at Princes Park were less than ideal with lots of muddy patches after some previous inclement weather and the crowd was disappointing with only 6,979 in attendance . St Kilda led at half time and were still in the game until the final quarter when Hawthorn finally kicked away and won by 21 points Hawthorn 8.11.59 St Kilda 5.8.38. Terry Wallace had 30 possessions for Hawthorn while Trevor Barker and Peter McConville had 33 touches for the Saints. The only multiple goal kickers were Hawthorn’s Jason Dunstall and Gary Buckenara each with two goals. Peter McConville most impressed the umpires gaining the three Brownlow Medal votes Paul Abbot of Hawthorn got the two votes and Jon Collins of St Kilda got one vote.

At the Western Oval in front of 21,963 fans Sydney defeated Footscray in a good back and forward game with Footscray establishing an early lead but Sydney came back and had a great third quarter which would end up being the difference as Footscray were unable to come back in the final quarter falling short by 16 points with Sydney 12.14.86 to Footscray 11.4.70. The top possession getter was Greg Williams of Sydney with 35 and for Footscray Stephen Wallis had 31 touches and Brad Hardie 30. Simon Beasley kicked four goals for Footscray and for Sydney Tony Morwood and Warwick Capper each kicked three. Paul Hawke of Sydney got the three Brownlow votes with Greg Williams receiving two votes and Brad Hardie the one.

At VFL Park 14,692 fans saw Fitzroy beat Carlton in a tight game 8.11.59 to Carlton 7.11.53. Top disposal getter for Fitzroy was Mark Dwyer with 28 while for Carlton Wayne Harmes had 25 touches. The only multiple goal scorer was Richard Osborne of Fitzroy with four goals. Leon Harris of Fitzroy got the three Brownlow votes Harmes got two votes and Dwyer one.

Down in Geelong at Kardinia Park Collingwood had a thumping 71 point victory over Geelong 19.15.129 to 8.10.58 with most of the crowd of 17,659 leaving disappointed. Wes Fellowes of Collingwood got 29 disposals with Michael Kol of Geelong finishing with 26. Brian Taylor of Collingwood bagged seven goals and was comfortably the leading goal scorer. Fellowes ended with the three Brownlow votes David Cloke of Collingwood received two votes and Bruce Abernathy also of Collingwood got the one vote.

At the MCG 21,560 fans saw Essendon thump Melbourne by 122 points 27.20.182 to Melbourne 8.12.60. Leon Baker, Michael Richardson and Alan Ezard all had over 30 possessions for Essendon. Paul Salmon of Essendon kicked eight goals with Ezard kicking six. Ezard got the three Brownlow votes with Baker getting the two and Salmon one vote.

WAFL – 5th July 1986

There was two games in this split round with two more matches to follow on the 12th to conclude round 15.

At Perth Oval 4,837 saw East Perth defeat Swan Districts 17.20.122 to 13.6.84. In the other game 9,031 people were in attendance at Lathlain Park as Perth decimated West Perth 6.15.51.

SANFL – Round 14

In SANFL Round 14 action Glenelg defeated Woodville 17.10.112 to 11.7.73.

State of Origin – 8th July 1986

At Subiaco Oval 39,863 parochial West Australians saw one of the greatest ever games of Australian football as the home team won the Australian championship 21.11.137 against Victoria 20.14.134. This game had it all the first three quarters were excellent with great action in a tight game that Western Australia had the better off but Victoria weren’t far behind needing to beat Western Australia by about four goals to take home the championship. The last quarter was next level Victoria surged ahead early and then Western Australia came back but at one stage it looked like Victoria were going to get the win but Western Australia came back again and Gary Buckenara who had a great game kicked the winning goal in a clutch performance a must watch game for every fan of Australian football and anyone else that wants to see high level sporting action.

Best players for Western Australia included Brian Peake who kicked seven goals and Buckenara who bagged five Brad Hardie won the Simpson Medal for the best Western Australian on the ground. For Victoria rovers Dale Weightman and Brian Royal were the stars each kicking five goals and almost getting their side home.
